If you are looking for a personal challenge and you want to learn more about yourself— travel to somewhere alone.

Bolzano, Italy

You don’t really need to go far. Take a trip over the weekend to somewhere close to where you live. Pack you backpack, take a train and get ready for life to surprise you.

That is what I did last week with my 3-day trip to Italy.

I had 3 days, 3 cities.

I walked 50 km overall.
I had breathtaking sunsets and sunrises.
I had adventures.
I had moments of excitement, of fear and loniless.
I had so many thought and ideas.
I had enlightening discoveries.
I had a lot of coffee and reading.
I had stories heard and stories told.

In all of that I though I will detach myself from my usual environment. In the end, I guess it is true when people say that what you are intentionally running away from finds you: I met so many people I know! How comes that these acquittances where traveling to the same cities, taking the same buses? I was deliberately not using social media, not getting in touch with friends (only my mum was an exception, you understand), not posting anything about my trip — but somehow still bumped into friends, former colleagues and classmates.

My biggest take-away from the trip is

people need people.

We are social animals and as a result, even though we all need our space, in the end of the day we want to have someone waiting for us, someone listening, someone sitting with us and not necessarily talking to us.

In traveling alone, I have clearly understood, why do we need music, why do we have art, books, and generally why is it important to be surrounded with nature and beauty (whatever beauty means for you).

This all being said, take a trip to yourself. Take it to grow, to discover and to learn.
